Merzouga Desert Adventure

Sand Dunes, Camel Rides & Starry Nights in Morocco’s Sahara

Located on the edge of the Sahara near the Algerian border, Merzouga offers an unforgettable desert experience that feels like stepping into another world. Known for its towering sand dunes, golden sunsets, and magical night skies. Merzouga is therefor also a must-visit destination for anyone exploring Morocco beyond the coast.

🐪 Camel Treks Through Erg Chebbi

The massive Erg Chebbi dunes, reaching up to 150 meters, are the crown jewel of Merzouga. One of the most popular ways to explore them is by camel trek. These guided journeys usually begin in the late afternoon and take you deep into the dunes, just in time to catch a breathtaking desert sunset.

🌅 Spend the Night in a Desert Camp

After your camel ride, settle into a traditional Berber desert camp. Some are basic with tents and firelight, while others offer full glamping luxury with beds, showers, and even Wi-Fi. Either way, the peaceful silence and star-filled sky will leave a lasting impression.

🚙 4×4 & Sandboarding Adventures

If you’re up for more action, Merzouga offers plenty of desert thrills:

  • 4×4 dune bashing and off-road excursions
  • Sandboarding down steep golden slopes
  • Visits to Dayet Srij Lake, where flamingos sometimes gather in winter

🎶 Discover the Gnawa Culture

Take time to visit Khamlia village, just outside Merzouga, to experience the Gnawa musical tradition — a spiritual and rhythmic style of music brought from Sub-Saharan Africa. Locals often welcome visitors for live performances and tea.

🏜️ Best Time to Visit Merzouga

The best months to explore Merzouga are from October to April, when daytime temperatures are pleasant. Summers can be extremely hot, so plan accordingly if you visit in July or August.
